Smashed It : Revisited

So a few days back I posted about smashing my previous work commute time record.

Little did I know that a couple days later, aided by a little pouring rain and early morning energy rush, I will casually trim another 45 seconds off of it. Fixed gearing it up soaking wet, pretty impressive huh? :)

So as it stands now, the fastest commute ever from Bedstuy to Dumbo is 13 mins and 46 seconds. Sure beats the 45 minute J/M train to F train transfer clusterfuck. Long live bikes!

Smashed it

Today I smashed the record. Back in the days of the Blue Whale high 16's, low 17's and lazy 18's were the norm for the 3.7 mile Bedstuy-Dumbo track, but that time is long gone. I must say, these are relaxing in the saddle early morning miles, and granted that 12-13's are easily possible with speed on the mind. Switching to a proper bike alone cut two to three minutes off my morning commute, and this mornings 14.31 is not the limit. I know that Malum has more in it, even though this might be the fastest morning home-to-work commute so far, there are seconds upon seconds to cut in a dozen places.

Subrosa Malum - part 2

There it is. The bike I'm totally sweatin right now. Fast, comfortable, light, sexy, beefy. Not bad for a $650 complete. This morning I had a major breakthrough, as far as fixed gear bikes go, I guess. I learned how to skid on the damn thing. Just pull up on your right foot instead of mashing down and there it is. Alot easier then I thought. So between bunnyhopin curbs and skidding everywhere I'm a regular ol' fixed gear trickster now - how about that.

I'm pretty sure the wheels were machine built so it was no surprise that both wheels loosened up after a few days. Out comes the spoke wrench - ok for a quick fix but I will have to take it to a professional one of these days to make them nice and toight.
My Knog NERD and a front brake make this a nerd machine (no pun intended, of course), which is ok by me because the streets are talkin.

Riding in the Rain

Riding in the rain can be fun. Sitting for 8 hours in wet jeans right after - not so much. What first appeared as a slight mist as I was doing the pre-ride stretches outside my apartment building, turned to real deal rain exactly a mile away from the crib, according to the waterproof Knog. Northface overcoat did its job, but I really need to invest in some waterproof pants to wear over jeans in situations like this, and I need some fenders.

AIBLPM was at a rediculous 1.66, some really cool person even parked in a bike lane on the wrong side of the street! Now that takes some special skills, ballz and an attitude of a champ! After being cut off by a curl in a brand new Infinity Mega Truck, a simple split second skid turned into a full on drift, and I actually impressed myself. I imagined I looked very similar to a supermoto racer leaning in and sticking out the ol' foot. The fact that it was my left, titanium filled leg that was stuck out and dragged along kicked the whole situation up a notch. Add to it the fact that the Blue Whale (pictured below) was the drift tool of choice, and the scenario will impress anyone with a heart. A drift king, you say? No, no and no, a simple human with reaction time of a hungry mosquito.

Knog N.E.R.D Review Part 1

A few months back we mentioned Knog NERD bikey computer , ogling at its simple form and function. I don't know what it is, but i always get excited about anything that has to do with silicone - and one more or less strikes gold with the N.E.R.D., as the whole thing is textured like a luscious breast.

What can I say, this is my first velocycle computer and it does exactly what I want it to. I get my current speed, max speed, average speed, trip distance/time, total distance time and a nifty lightup function. Switch between all those by pushing on the screen - its one big button! Setup was easier then ordering Bangers and Mash at The Chip Shop in Park Slope, but more about that later.

Naturaly, I threw the NERD on my 20, and got it going as fast as I could - which was about 30mph. Swift.

As this is the first part of the review - i dont want to give away too many juicy details - to find out JUST how awesome this lil compy is, wait for part 2.
