Spinclacity 6.6.11

Going along with the theme from the previous post, this edition of Spinclacity is focused on the wonder that is the bike lane. All of this action is from just one day. Granted there is some swerving bicycle traffic - wobbly amateurs learning the magic of balance is fine by us. But between parked and passing cars, buses, joggers, walkers and motorized scooter things at times bike lanes are not the prime place for actually cycling. I mean, jogging in the bike lane? Really? A bit weird.

PS - you should always stop for red/stop signs and obey all the traffic laws, but if you see po-po, don't be stupid and make sure to stop. Wasting 15 minutes on standing by a Police cruiser as they fondle your license, making it all sticky from sugar frosting covered fingers is not fun. Even less fun is going to court for riding against traffic or some other silly shit and dropping off some beans.

Commute by Bike - For The Scared Folks

See? It's not so bad. There really is no reason to bitch about the cost of a subway ride when you have an option to do it for free**. Nor is there a reason to be on the train for 45 minutes instead of a 15 minute bike ride. Healthy, both physically and emotionally, arrive at your morning destination energized and sweaty - what could be better. Watch the vid and get inspired to either start doing it or do it more often! Man up.

**free if you don't obsess over your bike and spend more then twice the price of a monthly unlimited on it, monthly.

This One Time - Vol 3

So yesterday morning I cruise to work, and as can be expected, there are some meter maids hanging out in the bike lane.
These pictures may not show it, but I assure you, there was no emergency here. They were sitting on the hood of the car laughing, catching up, drinking coffee, and, I shit you not, eating Dunkin Donuts. All the while there was a 18 wheeler parked in the bike lane 10 yards ahead of them. As I was taking these pictures I received a few dirty looks from the party people, in fact they seemed to realize that they are bullshitting on tax payers dollar and they all hopped into their respective vehicles and drove past me a minute or two later, as I continued to bike along the path.

AIBLPM is born

Ahhh. What a refreshing Tuesday morning, and while my ride in was short, how unbelievably uplifting it was, what a perfect way to be awakened. After a hot and humid night of a nonstop AC worship its nice to set out on a daily work commute and only sweat due to physical activity, not mere existence. A nice breeze, blue sky, dry pavement, fresh pair of legs, tires at their optimum pressure, cars parked in bikelanes.... It was that last element which made me derive a new system, a new formula, if I may so say, to figure out just how pleasant of a work commute it was.
Thus, the AIBLPM was born. AIBLPM might be a mouthful to pronounce and a mindful to remember, but once you know that it stands for Assholes In Bikelanes Per Mile, it will stick. One could also use Autos instead of the horrid A-word, however that leaves the character of these people out of the description, and therefore should only be used when describing the term to preteens and law officials.

Now, how do I figure this ratio out and how can it help? Read on.

I have a superswift bicycle computer attached to my ride. Knog Nerd its called. My rapid commute to work is exactly 3.6 excitement filled miles, which take me from Bedstuy, Brooklyn to Dumbo, Brooklyn where I make my paper. AIBLPM is simply a calculation of the number of drivers in need of a parking space RIGHT in the middle of a bike lane divided by the number of miles of my trip to work.

Example - today the rate is 0.83 - since I managed to see 3 bike lane parkjobs within the distance of my commute - 3/3.6 = 0.83. Pretty simple. I expect this to be the average.

How will it help you? Well, that's up to you. Perhaps you can look at my findings, daily, and compare it to yours - just to see if your commute was really THAT bad. Perhaps, as a driver, you'll look at the rate and feel shame. Who knows. For me, I will try to figure out which days are best, which days are worse and simply report it to you, the reader.

Why measure it in the morning you ask, as opposed to say, commute home, where surely there are more cars to block the very few designated paths. Good question. Well, first thing in the morning, between 7 and 8, is when you catch, in my opinion, the pure offenders. People who do it because they have no fuckin idea, as opposed to because their job or fatigue dictates it. People who think that bike lanes are just another great idea - a designated double parking lane, a whole block long - just for them, or better yet, an extra passing lane.....why not?

Just as a note, if a bike lane parked car barely touches a bikelane - it does not count. A car has to be completely blocking a bike lane - preferably with a parking spot RIGHT next to it - for some extra asshole points. While my commute is rather short, the number of cars in bikelanes is often shocking, hence why I think this is a good representation.

I commute daily - and it will be my duty to bring you the AIBLPM ratio on a regular bases - otherwise there is no point.

Hey look, its a cop - everyone say HELLO!

What a nice morning. It's beautiful in NYC today. Not too hot or humid after last nights rains. Not to worry - your ass is about to get served and protected. Guess who runs a stop sign, swerves and abruptly stops in the bike lane without looking, then tells you to "Fuckin watch it" as he's about to door you without even realizing it - NYPD of course, who else. I'm a calm person, for the most part. But shit like this just pisses me off.

Look, I expect gangsta mamis in Nissan Maximas to cut me off as they struggle to hold their cellphones with their shoulder.
I expect fools in tinted out Escalades with overpriced rims to park in bike lanes, as the fix the EQ to zone into "This is why i'm hot (the remix).
Obviously, Bedford-locked curl dangling top hat guys will use any piece of the road as a passing lane as they rush around doing their holy work, bike lane or not.

But NYPD? The fuckin cops who are supposed to enforce safety and peace? What is this? Machiavelli the Prince put into action? If people can't love or respect you, the must fear you? Is this some sort of a crazy competition as to how much shit a cop can get away with before his papa cop tells him to knock it down a tad?

Why would a cop run a red light or a stop sign? Park in a bike lane? Why would a cop give a ticket to someone who's parked in a bike lane if they park there themselves? What are we supposed to do? Are we supposed to kick the cop car as we ride by? Yell at it? Take photos and send it to the mayor or whoever? Write petitions? Set the fuckin police cruisers on fire? Throw rocks at them from a secret location as they drive by? Spit on a cop car then waste your time dealing with a pointless summons? Fuck a police officers stay-at-home wife, dirty - then leave a "Parked my BIKE COCK in your wifes ASS" note, while the pig hubby goes about his daily business along with a lil order of Vietnamese food from the comfort of a nearby bikelane?

What do YOU think?

Hasids say no to sexy bikers and yes to driving like shit

"Leaders of South Williamsburg's Hasidic community are pressuring the city to paint over the newish bike lanes on Bedford and Wythe Avenues because they're appalled by the immodest attire of female cyclists pedaling through their neighborhood."Gothamist

Hmmm. Well, how about it. Aint that some shit.

iparkedinabikelane.org

http://www.iparkedinabikelane.org/ - the best idea ever. Sure, you can spit on these cars - but thats too easy, on them. These people came up with some fun little stickers you can keep in your pocket - then slap em on that nice Benz or Beemer lamping in that bike lane. Not sure what kind of stickers these are - but I sure hope they are those hard to scrape off ones. Check out their site for the bike store locations where these can be picked up. I'm getting mine today.

Get the Fuck out of the Bike lane!

If you ride a bike in NYC you know how much of a nightmare it can be. Now, i've been riding here for years and years, and i'm not too intimidated about weaving through traffic to move ahead - but at times one wants to just have a easy and fun ride. So when you compare the NYC bike scene to civilized cities such as Amsterdam and Berlin, the scene in this town makes you sick. Cars do not respect bikes what so ever - but I guess thats not news. In fact, cars think that bikes are in the way and that the bike lane is an extra passing or parking lane. I've been trying to my hardest to "ride" into the bike lane parked cars as much as i can, by accident of course, perhaps scratching the paint or kicking in the door. Sometimes if i'm pissed enough i happen to spit onto the bike lane - not realizing that there is a car's windshield RIGHT there for me to splatter my loogie onto - ooooops. I realize, however, that thats not helping the cause at all - infact i bet it makes these driver douchebags more anti-bike. Time to change my ways i guess.

A few people out there actually did something a lil more productive about the issue - and i applaud them. Good job. This city is getting better, but we got a long way to go. Check out the NY Times video below.
