Random Summer Enhancements & Developments
Being the AZ correspondent for C2D means being pretty fucking miserable in summer. But despite 3 months of 100-115 degree days, I've managed to stay pretty active shooting-wise. And the more I shoot, the more I try new gear and tweek existing equipment. So here's some of the new things I've been playing with this summer....
Kahr P380 (actual size shown):
I've always wanted one of these to replace the ratty (& unreliable) Keltec P3AT I've had since 2003, but the price is ridiculous.
So when my shop bought this used one at a crazy low price I had to scoop it up.
My ONLY complaint is the lack of a pocket clip like my Keltec had...I'm still searching for the right holster so that I'll actually carry it.
Surefire 60 round AR15 Magazine:
I've been waiting for these to hit the streets since January, so naturally I snagged the first one I came across. Utilizing a quad-stack design, it holds 60rds of 5.56mm without adding too much length over a standard USGI 30rd mag (shown for comparison)
It has hiccupped a few times, so it's not 100% reliable, but when it runs it's awesome.
EXO/NiB-X Finish:
WMD Guns out of Florida is now offering this refinishing service on many pistols and AR components. It is a Nickle-Boron coating that is slick to the touch, but requires no lubrication (supposedly...)
I had this G19 done to test it out, and have since sent a few more pieces out. Also upgraded on both of my carry guns are the new Trijicon HD night sights, with a much more visible front post during daytime use.
Rounding it out is the Raven Concealment Holster (this one accomodates a pistol-mounted light and extended/threaded barrel), which are pricy and take FOREVER to get, but seem to be worth the hassle. I liked this one so much I got another one immediately after....
Satanic SBR Upgrades:
This gun is damn-near perfect, so I rarely chance much on it. However, to shave weight, it is now sporting a Magpul CTR stock, Daniel Defense front & rear sights, and an Aimpoint T1 Micro on a DD Mount (my new favorite optic). Also upgraded the LED on the Surefire Scout Light to the new K2XC head (=BRIGHT!)
SCAR Mods:
There are very few aftermarket mods for the SCAR rifles, but I've finally gotten them both set up how I like them....
I'm now running a T1 Micro on the SCAR-16 as well, and using a Streamlight TLR-1S mounted over the barrel on the PWS Rail Extension. Everything else is the same as before.
The SCAR-17 finally has its own optic, the Trijicon ACOG TA11J-308. A perfect optic for this rifle. Also recently installed the Branham Tactical Rail Extension; much shorter than the PWS rail on my 16, but just enough extra length to cover the gas block. The sling is the Blue Force Gear Vickers Sling, which I swap between the 2.
and FINALLY, due to the above mods...I was comfortable enough to try the SCAR-17 out at a local match. It went pretty well, all things considered. Most importantly: the gun runs like a champ.

Vehicle Emergency Kit
In addition to a spare tire, jumper cables, and some bungee cords, there are some basic necessities one should keep in their vehicle at all times; particularly if they spend a lot of time alone in the less-civilized parts of the world. I have a few items in the trunk that most people would consider practical: hoodie, warm jacket, baseball cap, toilet paper, etc. I also always pack a Cold Steel Spetznaz Shovel, which is a pretty wicked tool for splitting skulls, rendering limbs useless, and hell....it works as a shovel too!
(and it's good for destroying old entertainment centers...)
I generally always carry a handgun on my person, and usually tote an AR15 with me when I'm on a roadtrip. But when you're packing in a hurry, or just happen upon a random excursion, it's good to know that there's always a little "backup" in case you need it.
Hence, the Vehicle Emergency Kit:
Tucked away in the wheel well under the trunk bed, it's pretty much out of sight even if someone goes through your car pretty thoroughly (assuming they're looking to steal, not searcing for hidden guns/drugs/babies etc...).

Waterproof and airtight, there is no concern for the elements affecting the contents:
So what we have in the compact little bundle is a loaded Glock 17 (we all have a few spare Glocks laying around right?), 2 extra mags (51rds total), and 4 AR15 mags (120rds total). Unfortunately, there is not an AR15 tucked away in there. In the past I have rolled with a semi-permanent "Trunk Gun" in a rifle case, but it's just too obvious: if someone breaks into your car, they're gonna see it (and take it), whereas a spare handgun is a bit more discreet. So assuming you packed your "Camping Rifle" to go up-north anyways, you have the peace of mind of knowing that you have 120 spare rounds stashed away.
Not exactly my choice for a "Go To War" kit, but this should be enough to deter a small mob, or at least persuade the neighboring campsite to shut their kids the fuck up:

Shook Guns Pt1.5
Welcome to the second installment of Shook Guns: Bridging the Gap.
In the previous article we saw the various sizes of GLock models in comparison; this time we'll see a customized model that fills the void between 19 and 26
What we have here is a GLock 19 that has had its grip chopped down to the length of the 26. It retains the barrel length and sight radius of the 19, but increases concealability by shortening the grip to the "pinkie-less" length of the 26.

The customization on this gun was done by David Bowie (nope, not that one...) at Bowie Tactical Concepts. In addition to the grip shortening, it has also had the "swell" removed from the back of the grip, and an aggressive grip texture added. Also note the rounded front of the triggerguard compared to the standard Glocks shown above. It is topped off with Heinie Straight-8 night sights (you align 2 vertical dots to aim rather than 3 horizontal dots).
This pic shows the optional mag extensions which increase the mag capacity from 10 to 12 rounds, and adds room for an additional fingerhold, but increases the overall size and length to that of the orginal 19 (i am not a fan of these extensions and do not used them for carry....)
I've always been intrigued by the "hybrid" concept on pistol like this, but never enough to send it off and pay someone a couple hundred dollars to chop it. Fortunately i came across this used specimen and was able to acquire it in a straight-up trade for the Glock 26 pictured above. It has no disadvantage versus the 26, and you only lose a bit of control over the 19 once you get used to the short grip. If i was paying to have this mod done, i would NOT remove the hump off the back of the grip, because it makes it almost too skinny, and i would NOT round off the front of the triggerguard because it does nothing except look stupid.
In closing this is a worthwile concept to look into...it allows comfortable concealed carry without having to compromise for a smaller caliber or inferior handgun.

SHOOK GUNS pt.1 : Primer on Glock Sizes
FACT: All handguns are NOT Glocks!
While urban slang contains terms such as Gat, Strap, Heater, Biscuit (etc) that refer to guns generically, Glock is a brand name. You wouldn't refer to every type of car as a Porsche, so don't make yourself sound ignorant by referring to a lesser quality gun (HiPoint, Jennings, Bryco, Jimenez, Raven, etc) as a "Glock".
Designed by Gaston Glock for the Austrian military in the mid 80's, the Glock handgun revolutionized pistol design, spawning scores of imitators (nearly every handgun manufacturer currently makes some type of Glock-like pistol).
The attributes that made the GLock a success include: lightweight polymer frame, high capacity magazine, inexpensive to manufacture, retardedly reliable under adverse conditions, internal safeties making manual safeties obsolete. I will not go into extensive detail about the Glocks in general because it is common knowledge that can be researched thru mainstream sources, like Wikipedia.
The .40cal GLock is the most common police weapon in the United States, with more than 75% off all cops carrying one.
Pictured above are 4 of the 5 different sizes of Glock 9mm handguns. from left to right: Subcompact Model 26 (known as the "baby" glock), Compact 19, Fullsize 17 (the Original Glock model), Practical/Tactical 34. Not pictured is the Longslide 17L, which has a slightly longer barrel than the 34. Generally, each model increases barrel length and grip length by 1/2" increments, although the 17, 34, and 17L have identical grips with varying barrel lengths.
Also note that the model 17 pictured is the 2nd generation frame, before the addition of finger grooves and accessory rail seen on the newer models.
Magazine capacity from left to right is 10, 15, 17 and 17. the beauty of Glock pistols is that mags are interchangeable between different models in the same caliber; therefore the 17rd mag of the model 17 can be used in the subcompact model 26 (with an inch of extra mag hanging out obviously).
The 26 is an ideal gun for concealment, but its abbreviated grip (not long enough to catch the pinky on normal sized hands) can make it trickier to handle for inexperienced shooters. The 19 bridges the gap, allowing a compact size for concealment but enough grip to hold onto like a full-size gun. The 17 is the standard duty-size pistol for Law Enforcement and Military applications. the 34 is slightly longer than the 17, popular with competition shooters ("practical") but also finding favor with SWAT and other Police users ("tactical").
Glocks in the 40s&w caliber are the exact same size as the 9mm models, and are designated as the Models 27, 23, 22, 35, 24 (from the subcompact up to the longslide). the 45acp and 10mm models also mirror each other in size, but are different from the 9mm/40sw versions (stay tuned for this info in future posts).
In the next installment of Shook Guns, we will see a customized Glock that blurs the lines and "cheats" its way inbetween the models 26 and 19 in size.
