Why I'm Gonna Go Ride Today: Vol 5
A few nice hits in here. Something about the vid captures the fun of riding during the warm days.

Meanwhile, in NC
I'm sorry, but this winter is bumming me out. Rain, snow, sleet, ice and actual turds falling from the sky are expected over the next few days. The snow piled outside C2D HQ is an awful amalgam of white, grey, black, brown and yellow. The garbage hasn't been picked up in over a month, and there is a bumcicle frozen solid in an ice-and-cardboard igloo blocking the loading dock.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, a boy and his dog rip some freshly dug DH goodness.

Where it all began
If you are old and still riding bikes in any more capacity than delivering takeout or bringing cans and metal to the recycling station, chances are you did something like this when you were a kid. Grab a scrap piece of particle board, an old tire, stump or a few bricks and kapow -- instant ramp. No compunction about hitting it, just put it at the bottom of the tallest hill in your neighborhood and let 'er rip. C2D will be all about the janky street spots and sessions this fall and winter. Stay tuned for quasi-organized session announcements. All are welcome. Except you fucking unicyclists.

Subrosa Malum

Fast. This puppy is fast. I'm sure there are faster bikes out there, but this is the fastest bike I've ever owned. Granted, my downhill bike can be fast if pointed in the right direction, but not like this. I always ride rapidly, but one can only be so quick on 24" wheels, or better yet 20"s. We're talking wind in the ears riding up Williamsburg bridge @ 20mph fast. How do I know? This guy told me.
The whole fixed gear deal is a trip. I constantly "stop" pedaling to take a second off, but the Subby immediately reminds me that "this aint be a coasting bike, son". Trippy. It's like a god damn exercise bike, I swear. Gearing is a bit high and tough, takes a bit to get it up to speed, but once it's up to cruising speed, its on. Might drop it a tooth or two in the future.
Front brake is a must at this point, since slowing down without it is an adventure. My very first fixed gear ride was a brave journey over Manhattan bridge, and it ended in the most last second panicked awkward brakeless bmx foot jam stopping procedure, while surrounded by Chinatown tourists. I was that guy. For some reason I thought that stopping a brakeless fixed gear would be easier - no better way to learn then to dive in at the deep end, or should I say steep end. Once I got to my destination, I threw a mandatory rolling barspin before I bolted on the brake - no worries. Anyone got any tips on doing some sweet skids?

Stem could be a bit shorter and not as dropped, I'm reaching. Perhaps that's how these bikes are meant to be ridden. I'm told that putting a short (50mm) stem on this thing would make it twitchy, but will it really be any twitchier then a rigid cruiser or a bmx? I guess I'll find out.
I'm also not a big fan of the Shadow grips, I like them softer, and Animal Edwins is where its at anyway.
I immediately outfitted it with some Hold Fast foot straps. They were highly recommended by Prolly, and since he seems to ride his bicycle quite well, I took his word. Plus, they are handcrafted in Brooklyn, and that happens to be my middle name ( introducing myself as Curtis Hand Crafted In Brooklyn Chorizali always makes people alert, as if a punchline is a breath away).
After a few days of riding and a few dozen of the roughest bunnyhops ever unearthed the rear wheel has a handful of loose spokes - might have to go to town with a spoke wrench before I ride this beast out to go eat me some BBQ this fine and sunny NYC afternoon. Expect much more on the bike as I ride it more.
There is never too many bike photos. Blue Whale is sold and gone - so this is THE new commuter - it really needs a name. Any suggestions?

Engin Cycles

A friend recently showed me a picture of this bike. What a gorgeous specimen right there. Over the past few days there has been quite a few semi-erotic images on this blog and judging by the amount of letters we've received from concerned readers, that is not the direction we'll move forward in. Those unfortunate few posts are the reason why I can't describe how I feel about the bike above with my true tongue. Let me just say, it reminds me of the day I became a man who knew about love.
I been meaning to build a commuter that's a bit more aesthetically pleasing then The Blue Whale, and I've been even considering scraping all the MTB parts and just getting a fullout single speed road bike thingy. I may no longer need to do that - as seeing this beauty above revitalized my senses and made me realize, all I need is a sexy steel frame of appropriate size - I have all the other necessities. Granted I'll still be stuck on the 26" wheels, as opposed to 29"s like above or the 700cc like the road bikes, but seeing the fixed gear freestyle debates about the 700cc vs 26" wheels, made me realize that I might be ahead of my time by freestyle commuting on a 26". Besides, I'm known to throw a barspin or two off a curb and what not, so I might just stick with the 26"s and let people think I'm a fixed gear freestyler as opposed to a MTB commuter.
When The Blue Whale was curated it was meant to be a "girlfriend" bike - a present that was returned to me a few short months after its birth, either because the said girlfriend dumped me or because the bike was a pile of crap. Or both. Since then it was repainted with the florescent blue can and received a rigid. The whole thing is just very sluggish to ride and the uber low frame/super high seatpost combo is less then "sexy". Couple that with drive train from hell and you got yourself a nightmare to ride. Yet, its the only bike I own that I can actually get full extension on, and my legs like that. Therefore the hunt is back on for a nice steel mtb frame with a horizontal top tube.
Its seems that the weekend will be beautiful. Ride!

The Most Entertaining Entertainment

The numbers don't lie (usually). There are nearly 7 billion people in the world, we surveyed 28 - which is pretty close to half of one millionth of a percent. Hard work, but someone had to do it.
What did we gather you ask? Something we already knew - riding bikes is BY FAR the MOST entertaining thing to do on a weekend.
Thanks Captain, you say. But wait, there is more! Chilling and relaxing was a close second, followed by video games and hobby time. What does this all mean? Its pretty straight forward, really. If you want to have yourself some fun this coming weekend - hop on the bike then play some videogames. Dont bother with sexytime - most people would rather grill some food or watch a movie. But is it a coincidence that sexy time and road trip both got 6 votes? Does this imply that people are getting road head or get it on at a hotel? Pulling over and getting freaky in the back seat? Or are we talking pocket pool here? Punching the dolphin? Slapping the clown?
Look, our job here at C2D is to bring you the facts, to give you the tools. We cut up the wings for you, diss the little retarded part, but YOU'll be the one heating up the oil, deep frying the fuckers, meanwhile getting some butter/Franks/vinegar going, mixing the whole thing up, then eating it. If we're the Nobel Prize, you'll have to be Obama. We'll put the food in your mouth, but we ain't chewing it for you - that's disgusting.

letting out the bad humours....

went to Prescott AZ to ride in the Granite Mountain wilderness today and got medieval on some old-school blood-letting...
the ride:
it was my 3rd time riding here, but the first time it was in the 60's and actually pleasant to ride. the worst thing was the insane gusting winds, but most of the ride was blocked by the hills. so that wasn't too bad. lots of variety in this area...i tried to avoid a majority of the chunky technical stuff and get the most time on the fast singletracks that cut thru the area. i parked at a trailhead that required that i get a lot of the uphill out of the way in the first 3 miles, guaranteeing that when i was ready to head back to the car i'd have a fast, smooth transition out.
maybe too fast....

i was on my way out after riding about 15 miles of trail and was going about 20mph hitting some little slalom jumps and having a blast when i suddenly found myself in a position that could be described as "not-so-much riding, but being face down on the trail with a bike on top of you. and bleeding."

in addition to the typical roadrash, i got a nice deep gash courtesy of a rocky outcropping that i decided to cuddle with....5 hours later i was wondering if i should be worried that it was still bleeding....

random pics:

my bike is pretty jacked but it was due for a tune-up so i guess we'll just make it an overhaul. the handlebars & front fork were about 45 degrees different when i got up...i was able to force it back to about 10 degrees off and ride back to the car without incident. the 90 mile drive home on twisty mountain roads was pretty interesting with a gimp arm (i know you guys remember those roads...).
in closing:
fucking awesome ride, can't wait to go back. and thank god for IPAs....they're speeding along my recovery as we speak. and will probably help when i dig that chunk of gravel out tomorrow.
